'Art in stone' highlights the work in stone of some of the most outstanding sculptors of the 20th century

Art in Stone - Exhibition

The exhibition of the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera celebrates the stone structure of Casa Milà - popularly known as La Pedrera - and places inside the building by Antoni Gaudí some of the late carvings of eight sculptors historical, born between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th: Hans Arp, Louise Bourgeois, Eduardo Chillida, Naum Gabo, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi and Jorge Oteiza, who were practically contemporaries; he describes his artistic paths, often parallel, to explore these new ways of expression, and points out points of convergence.

Apart from these abstract works, which will enter into a deep dialogue with La Pedrera, a complementary section allows us to see that the "pioneers" of modern sculpture have stimulated the next generation - Stephen Cox, Luciano Fabro, Barry Flanagan, Cristina Iglesias, Anish Kapoor, Ettore Spalletti and Alison Wilding—, and also that stone has inspired new conceptual ways of working.

Audiovisual

In the exhibition "Art in Stone" there is a documentary by the director Neus Ballús about the creative process of Barbara Hepworth.

Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera works on a line of audiovisual projects of its own production linked to the exhibitions. These documentaries are an enriching testimony in which art, creation, reflection and dialogue with the architecture of La Pedrera come together with the aim of expanding the exhibition experience, extending it over time, deepening in the knowledge of the artist and his work, and connect with a wider audience.

For the exhibition "Art in Stone" the director Neus Ballús, one of the most interesting and unique views of the current audiovisual scene, has built a sensory collage through the voice of the British sculptor Barbara Hepworth to expose the way in which this artist understood sculpture. His works in stone are also inseparable from the unique landscapes of Cornwall and directly dialogue with the works made by men - and perhaps women - of prehistory, who, like the sculptor, found in the carving of the stone a way of understanding and expressing the deep meaning of our presence on Earth.

"For me, the sculpture reaffirms our vitality. The essence of the materials is a symbol of continuity, and the figure in a landscape, the silent image or the upright stone are a sign of our desire for survival and security."

Barbara Hepworth

"Every material has its own individual qualities. Only when the sculptor works with it directly, when he establishes an active relationship with his material, does the material contribute to forming an idea."

Henry Moore
